A cast of struggling actors performing in a musical play get locked inside a theatre, meanwhile the deranged murderer Irving Wallace escapes from a mental asylum and hunts them down one by one. Can they survive the night, or will their next performance be their last?
StageFright is a 1987 Italian horror film directed by Michele Suavi, who's also known for directing The Church and the cult favorite Cemetery Man. This was his first time in the directors chair though, and I must admit, it is a stylish take on the slasher film genre.
The thing that stands out the most in this film however is its soundtrack composed by Simon Boswell and Stefano Mainetti. The music in this film has a really cool Synth / Jazz sound. From the start it's energetic, executed wonderfully and really sets the mood. That's all I can really say about it, it just needs to be mentioned.
This slasher plays it right by letting it start off with a few death's that are relatively bloodless, then building up to limbs being chopped off and a useful use of power tools. The gore is there but it doesn't show up until after the first half of the film. Don't let that deter you from watching this film though, with some snappy dialogue between the cast of the stage musical, beautiful camera work , as well as an awesome soundtrack, and the few deaths in between. It will keep the pace flowing and the bodies will dropping before you know it.
